The Tabernacle was an excellent venue for the tour. There were two
balconies above the dance floor with seats on these balconies for
those that wished to sit, but it was fantastic to look up from the
dance floor to see the masses dancing on the balconies. Orbital
came out around 11 PM and played for a good hour to an hour and
a half. They played all the expected hits - Style, Halcyon + On
+ On (Bon Jovi mix), The Box, and Satan as an encore (the crowd
screamed for it). The lighting was fantastic and the crowd peaked
during Halcyon. The brothers really got into it during a hardcore
version of the Box (the best I've ever heard). I was surprised to
see so few ravey kids out there and so many "normal" concert-goers.
It really showed how Orbital and the others have taken electronic
music to the next level. Excellent show altogether!

It's
always nice to see Orbital in the US after they've refined their
act in the UK. By now, they've been on tour for a while, so they
come out sounding really tight and they're a lot more laid back
about playing live. As a result, they end up having a lot of fun,
which is exactly what I saw last night. This was the third time
I've seen them (saw them twice in 1996) and I've never seen Phil
dance so much.
After reading the UK reviews, I was hoping they'd play An Fhomair
and Open Mind, so I was a little disappointed when they didn't.
They played everything else, though. The way Spare Parts Express
blended into Impact was amazing. Know Where to Run sounded really
deep and hard -- much more than the album version. Halcyon and Satan
were pretty much the same as the last time around. Everybody expected
the Bon Jovi/Belinda Carlisle samples this time. The Box sounded
great after I Don't Know You People. Everybody really got into that
one. It sounded like they only played part 2 of Nothing Left. The
disco balls were a nice touch. I'm not a big fan of Style, so the
end of the first set kinda left me flat. I don't have the single,
so I'd never heard Bigpipe Style before.
The encore more than made up for it, though. Satan was nothing new.
The Dr Who theme really made the night, though. together with Chime,
that gave the show a perfect ending. They made Chime last forever.
Paul kept blurting out stuff on the mike between numbers but I couldn't
make out what he'd said. Phil just kept saying thank you. Paul also
kept pointing in my direction at somebody. I was the only one I
saw wearing a blue t-shirt from the last tour, and I yelled "Omen"
between numbers, so I guess it could've been me, but it probably
wasn't. :)
Everything sounded perfect. The acoustics were clear and loud, unlike
Crystal Method's which were just loud. The visuals were really impressive,
even though I only looked at them a few times the whole show. I
was too busy dancing. I must admit, I liked the set list on the
previous tour better, since it had more of a balance between old
and new. The new tracks sound even better live than recorded, though.
I hope some of them get recorded and released like last tour (HINT!)
